New Wenyon Scholarship at the DCF Helps UD Students Pursue Medical Careers

Students in the University of Delaware’s Emergency Care Unit (UDECU) are eligible for a new scholarship at the Delaware Community Foundation (DCF), thanks to a father-daughter duo.

The Angela M. Wenyon Memorial Scholarship was established in 2023 by Leonard and Sarah Wenyon. Named after Angela Wenyon, who was Leonard’s wife and Sarah’s mother, the scholarship helps graduating and former University of Delaware students who volunteered with the school’s emergency care unit attend graduate school in the medical field.

The Wenyon family has several connections to the UDECU. Sarah Wenyon, now a graduate student at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, was a UDECU volunteer while she was a student at UD.

“It was a really cool, hands-on experience from the beginning,” Sarah said. “Having a like-minded group of people in college is what everyone looks for, and this group had an environment of cultivating intellectual curiosity in the medical field.”

UDECU also played an important role in caring for Angela Wenyon, who had numerous health issues and passed away in December 2022.

After Angela’s passing, Sarah and Leonard wanted to both honor her memory and thank the emergency service members who tended to her over the years. Sarah envisioned a scholarship to help the students continue their studies.

“After watching all of the caregivers come through our lives because of Angela, we felt like we had to give back in some way,” Leonard said. “The scholarship is not going to pay for medical school, but it’s a token of support to thank them for what they do and what they want to do in their futures.”

Eligible students can apply for the Wenyon Scholarship when the DCF scholarship application opens in December. The Wenyon Scholarship is one of hundreds of available DCF scholarships, created by generous donors who see the need to help with the cost of post-secondary education.
