Two Aspiring Journalists Joined DCF Journalism Internship Program for Summer 2023

Two aspiring journalists worked in local newsrooms this summer through the DCF Journalism Internship Program, helping increase local coverage, deepening the pipeline of local journalists, and elevating stories of underserved communities.  

The internship program is a partnership of the DCF, the Local Journalism Initiative and the Maryland Delaware DC Press Association. This year’s interns and their hosting newsrooms are: 

Bryce Jenkins, The News Journal – Jenkins is a senior at Hofstra University studying graphic design. He began his photography career while attending Design Lab Academy and Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington, where he currently resides.  

Cal Ransom, WHYY – Ransom is a third-year student at Oberlin College, studying sociology with a concentration in journalism. They are a co-host of WOBC Radio News as well as a news editor for The Oberlin Review. They are a resident of Wilmington. 

The interns also participated in educational programming and were mentored by Larry Nagengast, a journalist with over 50 years of experience in local news in Delaware.

“Having a strong local news ecosystem is essential for our democracy and thriving communities,” said Allison Taylor Levine, DCF vice president for marketing and communications and president of the Local Journalism Initiative. “This summer, these aspiring journalists had the opportunity to learn from the very best in Delaware and help engage our communities, keep our government accountable and share important stories from diverse communities.” 

Interns worked from June through August. Their stories and works are available through the media outlets’ platforms and on the DCF website.
