First Berberian Scholarship Recipients Experience “Once-in-a-Lifetime” Study Abroad Trips
Three Delaware Technical Community College Owens Campus students embarked on “once-in-a-lifetime” international study abroad trips this spring, thanks in part to the new Rambo Rozi Berberian Scholarship at the Delaware Community Foundation (DCF).
Through the first Berberian Scholarships, Matt Buczik studied in Italy, Shamariah Doakes in the Dominican Republic, and Lamar Kellam in Ireland.
Established in 2022, the Berberian Scholarship is named after Lewes resident Diane “Rambo Rozi” Berberian, who died in July 2020. Berberian, a staunch supporter of students learning abroad and experiencing different cultures, raised thousands of dollars to support study abroad for students at the DelTech Owens Campus in Georgetown.
Matt Buczik, a marine biology major, traveled to the southern coast of Italy to learn how local Italian farmers practice sustainability to maintain healthy crops year after year.
“I knew a little bit about sustainability, but it definitely made me see more,” said Buczik. “I’ve always had a negative view of ‘why buy an electric car when all my neighbors have big diesel, lifted trucks.’ But, now I can see how one person can make a difference.”
Kellam is earning a dual degree in human services and drug and alcohol counseling. His trip took him all over Ireland, to Belfast, Dublin, Galway and to his favorite spot, the Cliffs of Moher. While in Ireland, he learned about the history of the country and the different cultures of the Irish.
“I learned a lot about Ireland while studying abroad,” said Kellam. “The trip really broke down a lot of stereotypes of the Irish and who they are and where they come from. It was really enriching.”
Doakes, a nursing student graduating later this year, went to the Dominican Republic to provide medical care to locals.
“As soon as I was accepted for this trip, I began applying for scholarships,” said Doakes. “I was excited when I was awarded the (Berberian) scholarship because I could go on my trip and I knew part of my expenses were going to be covered.”
Future DelTech Owens Campus study abroad students can apply for the Rambo Rozi Berberian Scholarship starting in November at delcf.org/scholarships. The Berberian family also welcomes gifts to the fund at delcf.org/donations/berberian.
